For years, my mom and I have talked about hauling all of the old juniper trees out of the front of the main house and converting the terraces they were covering into a beautiful flower garden. Fortunately, I have a very giving and caring mother-in-law with a tremendous amount of skill in creating flower gardens, and she finally got us going on the project. For many Sundays this summer, she and my wife came out and worked - first we tore everything out, then we prepared the ground, then we added the flowers - roses on the top terrace and other varieties on the lower terrace. The Hibiscus on the side - a tropical plant that grows surprisingly well here in Idaho, is one of my favorite features. The change is dramatic, don't you think? We have not - and will not -use any chemicals, but we have used "homegrown compost", and it really has promoted the rapid growth of these beautiful plants. Thanks to Colleen, my mother-in-law, for spearheading this. I can't wait to see what it looks like next Spring!
