Kevin Layton, my good friend from New Orleans who moved here after Hurricane Katrina, died last July and we had a memorial celebration of his life at the Book Farm, right in front of the deck helped me to build. When we built the deck I did not really know what my plan was for it - I just knew I wanted a deck there and so did my mom - a big one! Since we built it, I've sat out there many times and dreamed about the possibilities. It's truly a symbol for me of building something brick by brick (or floorboard by floorboard, in this case). It proved to be the perfect backdrop for his memorial and it will be the perfect backdrop one day for weddings and other ceremonies in the future. Sometimes we don't know why we do what we do, but just by doing it, we learn.
